Physio or Personal Trainer? How to Know What You Need After an Injury

You hurt your knee, your shoulder or your back. Now what? Do you see a physiotherapist, or do you go back to the gym and work with a personal trainer?

It is one of the most common questions I hear in Milton, and the honest answer is: it depends on where you are in your recovery. Here is a simple way to figure it out.

When to see a physiotherapist

A physiotherapist is a regulated healthcare professional trained to assess and treat injuries. Start with physio if:

  • Your injury is new or recent

  • You have pain at rest, at night, or pain that is getting worse

  • You have swelling, bruising, or your joint feels unstable

  • You can't do normal daily activities without pain

  • You had surgery or a significant injury like an ACL tear, a fracture or a dislocation

  • You are not sure what is wrong

A physio will figure out what is going on, explain it clearly and build a plan to get you moving again. In Ontario, you don't need a doctor's referral to book physiotherapy.

When a personal trainer makes sense

A personal trainer helps you get stronger and fitter. Working with a trainer is a good fit if:

  • You have no pain, or only mild aches that don't change how you move

  • You have been cleared to return to activity after an injury

  • Your goals are strength, fitness, weight loss or performance

The gap most people fall into

Here is where a lot of people get stuck. They finish physio when their pain is gone, but they are nowhere near ready to sprint, lift heavy or play a full game. Then they jump straight back into their sport, and the injury comes back.

Pain going away is not the same as being fully recovered. Your strength, power and confidence often lag behind for months. That gap between "my pain is gone" and "I'm ready to perform" is where reinjuries happen.

Why we do both

At Ben Performance & Physiotherapy, I work as both a registered physiotherapist (MScPT) and a certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS). That means one person can guide you from the early stages of rehab, through strength training, all the way back to your sport or your goals.

No starting over with someone new. No guessing about what is safe. Just one plan, from injury to performance. Learn more about our personal training in Milton and training for athletes.
